Lord Rosse's 3-foot telescope,Ireland. 19th-century illustration of the 3-foot telescope constructed in 1839 at Birr Castle,Parsonstown,Ireland,by the Irish astronomer William Parsons (on the observing platform,1800-1867),later the 3rd Earl of Rosse. Research carried out with this telescope included measurements of the temperature of the Moon in 1868. The telescope is shown with its altazimuth mount. It was redesigned and remounted as an equatorial telescope in 1876.
