Halley's Comet in 684,historical illlustration. This appearance (apparition) by what would later be called Halley's Comet,is now designated 1P/684 R1. The comet reached perihelion on 2 October 684. This artwork was originally published in the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493). It was a generic and stylised image of a comet,used to illustrate several different comets in this book and others. 'Stella crinita' (bottom) is Latin for comet. This artwork was republished in 'The Cycle of Celestial Objects continued at the Hartwell Observatory to 1859' (1860) by British astronomer William Henry Smyth (1788-1865) | |
