William Beaumont (1785-1853),US Army surgeon and gastric physiology pioneer. Beaumont is best known for the experiments he carried out on Canadian woodsman Alexis St. Martin (1802-1880),who had been injured by a gunshot wound in 1822. The wound resulted in a fistula (hole) connecting the skin and stomach, enabling Beaumont to place food on strings in St. Martin's stomach. Beaumont's research was published in 'Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice and the Physiology of Digestion' (1833). For a diagram of the fistula, see image C023/0176.
