Stomach digestion research. 19th-century diagram and text illustrating the gastric fistula used for experiments on stomach physiology by US Army surgeon William Beaumont (1785-1853). This fistula (hole) connected the skin and stomach of Canadian woodsman Alexis St. Martin (1802-1880),who had been injured by a gunshot wound in 1822. He was treated by Beaumont, who then carried out experiments on digestion by using the fistula to place food on strings in St. Martin's stomach. This artwork and the results of Beaumont's research were published in 'Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice and the Physiology of Digestion' (1833) | |
