Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen (1841-1912),Norwegian physician. Hansen studied in Oslo and specialised in the study of the disease leprosy. He made key discoveries in the epidemiology of the disease, showing that it had a specific cause rather than being hereditary. He 1873,he identified the cause as Mycobacterium leprae, though it was later work by Albert Neisser, using samples provided by Hansen, that demonstrated the bacterial nature of the disease. Hansen worked to reduce leprosy in Norway, with leprosy laws passed in 1877 and 1885. Hansen presided over the second International Leprosy Congress in Bergen in 1909 | |
