Redshift for BAS 11 galaxy supercluster. Comparison of the shift (to the right) in spectral absorption lines (dark, vertical) for the Sun (top) and the BAS 11 supercluster of galaxies (bottom). The lines show absorption of light by (from right) hydrogen, sodium and other elements. This shift (a cosmological redshift),is caused by the expansion of the universe and is used as a measure for the distance of very distant objects. BAS 11 has a redshift of seven percent of the speed of light (0.07c) and a distance (d) of 1 billion light years. It is located in the constellation of Ursa Major. BAS 11 contains twenty dense galaxy clusters, with over 10,000 galaxies | |
