Anaesthesia drop bottle, circa 1880. This is a Mills chloroform drop bottle, used to administer drops of chloroform,a volatile liquid anaesthetic introduced in 1847. A wire frame mask covered with cotton gauze (or a similar device) would be placed over the patient's mouth and nose. Then chloroform was dripped on the fabric at a controlled rate from the bottle, allowing the patient to inhale a mix of the evaporated anaesthetic and air during surgery | |
