Anaesthetic inhaler. This is a page from a Collin trade catalogue showing an Ombredanne inhaler, invented by Professor Louis Ombredanne (1871-1956) a French surgeon. It was subsequently widely used throughout Europe. In 1907,after two fatalities caused by anaesthesia,Ombredanne designed an inhaler that would be safer to use. It consisted of a metal spherical vessel packed with felt to act as an absorbent wick for liquid ether. The mask fitted over the nose and mouth. A swivel control varied the ratio of ether vapour and re-breathed air | |
