Anaesthetic inhaler, circa 1890. This is a Hewitt modified Junker inhaler developed by Dr. Ferdinand Junker and modified by Frederic W. Hewitt. In 1867,Junker introduced his inhaler for bichloride of methylene, which is a mixture of chloroform and methyl alcohol. It was the first inhaler to use the blow-over principle, using a hand-pumped rubber bellows to push air over the liquid anaesthetic. The inhaler was attached to a face mask from which the patient inhaled the anaesthetic vapour | |
