This portable underwater oil-burning lamp was designed by Joseph Cabirol (1799-1874),French inventor and designer of diving equipment. It consisted of a coventional lamp as used in France at that time, either a Carcel or moderator lamp, which burned colza oil,a vegetable oil of the same family as rapeseed oil. The lamp was enclosed in a watertight crystal globe and was connected to the pump box by a double pipe system, one that supplied air to provide oxygen for the lamp to burn, the other as an exhaust for the combustion gases. It was capable of giving a continuous bright illumination for ten hours at a time on one filling | |
