James Watt (1736-1819),Scottish engineer and inventor. Watt made numerous practical improvements to the steam engine of his day. By 1790,the superior Watt steam engine had replaced the older Newcomen variety. He also coined the term 'horsepower' to describe a unit of energy. This marble statue by Sir Francis Chantrey shows Watt using dividers on a diagram of a steam engine. It was erected in 1825 in St Paul's Chapel in Westminster Abbey. It was removed in 1960.
