Bose-Einstein condensate,IBM research. IBM scientist Lijian Mai holding the thin non-crystalline polymer film used to create a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). The film (35 nanometres thick) is placed between two mirrors and excited with laser light. Pioneering work at IBM Research demonstrated this complex quantum mechanical phenomenon using non-crystalline solid materials. The discovery, made using a luminescent polymer, has potential applications in developing novel optoelectronic devices including energy-efficient lasers and optical switches.
