Philae probe landing site. The red cross marks the first touchdown site of the the Rosetta spacecraft's Philae lander on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12th November 2014. The site is on the smaller of the comet's two lobes. The lander is thought to have bounced twice after this initial touchdown. The Rosetta spacecraft was launched in March 2004 on a 10 year mission to reach this comet. It entered orbit on 6 August 2014 at a point in the comet's orbit beyond the orbit of Mars. The first mission designed to land on a comet,it is carrying instruments to map and study the comet's surface and core.
