Impact craters on Mars, satellite image. The crater at centre (48.5 metres wide) is the largest associated with an impact on Mars that took place between 27 and 28 March 2012. This crater is the largest impact crater anywhere that has been clearly confirmed by before and after images. The craters could be due to impacts from fragments of an asteroid that exploded in the atmosphere. The smaller secondary craters could be due to ejecta from the larger central craters. This image was obtained on 9 May 2014 by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) instrument on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) satellite | |
