CERN upgrade,LHC Long Shutdown 1. Close-up of the last shunt work (of around 27,000) for SMACC (Superconducting Magnets And Circuits Consolidation) at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during LS1 (Long Shutdown 1). The LHC,the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, began operating in 2008. LS1 (scheduled from February 2013 to early 2015) is designed to enable operation at higher energies. The main work,as shown here with the shunt work,is consolidating 10,170 high-current splices between the superconducting magnets along the LHC's 27-kilometre circumference.
