Quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) in a water quality sample. This freshwater mussel is native to Eastern Europe. It was first detected in the US in 1989. It is an aggressive invasive species that kills and out-competes other mussels and alters the local environment. It is a prolific breeder,with females able to produce one million eggs per day.
