Philae probe landing site. Image of the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko showing the primary landing site (top) chosen for the Rosetta spacecraft's Philae lander. The site is on the smaller of the comet's two lobes. The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft was launched in March 2004 on a 10 year mission to reach this comet. It entered orbit on 6 August 2014 at a point in the comet's orbit beyond the orbit of Mars. The first mission designed to land on a comet,it is carrying instruments and a lander to map and study the comet's surface and core.
