Jupiter and comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Composite image showing Jupiter (upper centre) and fragments of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (bright dots). Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was discovered on 24th March 24 1993. It was the first comet to be observed orbiting a planet rather than the sun. The effect of Jupiter's tidal forces had already torn the comet apart and eventually the fragments collided with Jupiter between 16-22nd July 1994. Imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope,in 1994 | |
