Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911),British botanist. Educated in medicine at Glasgow,Hooker served as Assistant Surgeon and Naturalist on Ross's Antarctic expedition of 1839-43. He then travelled widely and published many books from his observations,the greatest being 'Flora of British India' (1872-97). Later he succeeded his father,Sir William Hooker,as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. He also joined Bentham in producing the 'Genera Plantarum',a seven-volume work on the classification of plants. He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1873,knighted,and awarded the Order of Merit (1907). Photographed in 1897 | |
