Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas),19th-century artwork. This marine mammal,related to the the manatee and the dugong,lived in the Bering Sea and was hunted to extinction in the 1700s. It grew up to 8 metres in length and weighed up to 11 tonnes. It was herbivorous with no teeth,feeding on seaweeds such as kelp using the grinding plates in its mouth.
