Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689),English physician and epidemiologist. Sydenham was the first to describe measles and scarlet fever. He pioneered the use of quinine to treat malaria,iron compounds for anaemia and opium for pain relief. He gained a reputation as the English Hippocrates. In 1676 he published his studies in the book 'Observationes medicae'. This statue,one of 28 in the court at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History,was unveiled on 9 August 1894.
