High-temperature superconductor. Artwork of magnetic excitations (black ripples) in a high-temperature superconductor. This phenomenon was studied using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS),with the technique shown here. The precise energy change is measured as beams of incident X-rays (blue arrow) strike the quantum ripples and bounce off (red arrow). Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory,New York,USA,found that these excitations were present in both superconducting and non-superconducting forms of LSCO (lanthanum, strontium, copper, and oxygen) materials.
