Composite image of Cometary Globule LDN 1622. LDN 1622 is a dark nebula which lies in the sky close to Barnard's Loop - a large cloud surrounding the complex of emission nebulae found in the Belt and Sword of Orion. The dark obscuring dust of LDN 1622 is thought to be much closer than Orion's nebulae, possibly only 500 light-years away. LDN 1622 is actively forming young stars in its regions of very dense gas and dust. Cometary globules appear as dark blobs silhouetted against the bright, colourful nebula. Intense stellar winds from nearby hot stars blast material away from the 'heads' of the globules, forming the 'tails' and creating the cometary shapes.
