Testis tissue in infertility. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through tissue from a Sertoli cell-only testis of an infertile male patient. The infertility is due to the absence of germ cells in the testis. The seminiferous epithelium is occupied by Sertoli cells only. Their nuclei (rounded) are located at the base of the epithelium (down right and across bottom) along with lipid inclusions. The deeper aspects of the epithelium (centre) are filled with ramifying processes of the Sertoli cells in contrast to the normal testis in which this region is occupied by many developing germ cells.
