Male and female adonis blue (Lysandra bellargus) butterflies feeding on nectar from a greater knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa) flower. This is the rarest of the blue butterflies found on chalk downlands in the south of England. One of the most distinctive features is that the white border of both front and back wings is broken by black lines. The adults emerge in late May/June and again during August.
