Didinium attacks Paramecium, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Didinium nasutum (lower right) is a single-celled ciliate protozoan found in freshwater and marine habitats. It is a predatory organism, feeding on other ciliate protozoans, mainly Paramecium (left). Didinium has two girdles of cilia, which are used for locomotion, and a prominent snout (centre) that is used as a probing and seizing organ during feeding, with its prey drawn into its body cavity through its 'mouth' or cytostome. Paramecium, also a ciliate protozoan, has cilia across its body used for movement. It feeds mainly on bacteria and other food particles | |
