Bluebottle fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head and thorax of a bluebottle fly (Calliphora sp.). Its large compound eyes (brown) dominate its head. Female bluebottles lay their eggs on meat to ensure a plentiful supply of food for their larvae once hatched. Bluebottle fly adults feed on nectar, while the larvae (maggots) feed on carcasses of dead animals. The adult fly has a proboscis for the ingestion of food. It is tipped with a sponging disc, with which it soaks up liquid from plants, decaying matter or wounds on animals. Flies such as this may transmit diseases, particularly if they land on uncooked food.
