Ponting's darkroom in Antarctica. British photographer Herbert George Ponting (1870-1935) in his darkroom on 24 March 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Ponting was the official expedition photographer. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition,the primary objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott,a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole. Ponting's 1700 photographic plates,some published in 'The Great White South' (1921),are now held by the Scott Polar Research Institute | |
