Terra Nova Antarctic depot laying. Expedition members unloading supplies for a depot on 8 February 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). The boxes are labelled Huntley and Palmer's biscuits. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott,a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Depots such as this were laid at various points to prepare for the long trek south in the attempt to reach the South Pole. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from that journey to the South Pole. Photographed by Herbert George Ponting | |
