Antarctic oceanography research. British biologist Dennis Gascoigne Lillie (1884-1963) preparing a tow net on 1 January 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). He is at the stern of the ship Terra Nova,using a derrick to deploy and recover the net. Lillie was the ship biologist and would stay with the ship and continue his research there after the shore party had landed. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition,the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott,a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf.
