Mariopteris muricata is a now extinct plant,a seed fern that lived in the Upper Carboniferous (= Pennsylvanian) epoch. It was a climbing variety,as opposed to most seed ferns then living, which grew as trees. Some Mariopteris species (not the one here displayed) had climbing hooks at the end of the leaves, but several types of leaves occur in the group. This slab of mudstone is from Piesberg,Germany | |
