Zamites gigas is a now extinct,cycadeoid (cycad like) plant of the order Bennettitales that first appeared in the Triassic period and became extinct toward the end of the Cretaceous. Thick trunks characterized them,with pinnate leaves giving off from side branches at a wide angle,alternate and not contiguous. This fossil of Zamites gigas is from middle Jurassic sediments near Whitby on the east England coast. Actual length of this branch is 23 cm | |
