Terra Nova Antarctic exploration. British explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) standing by a large ice crack in Antarctica. He is the leader of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition,the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Scott and the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott led a polar party southwards in November 1911 in an attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. He and four others died in 1912 on the return journey.
