Prosthetic joint testing. Engineers using holographic interferometry to measure the roughness of the surface of a prosthetic knee joint. The prosthetic joint is in the black box at left. A laser is aimed at the joint,via a series of mirrors,and the light reflected from the joint is collected and used to form a hologram. Any irregularities in the surface of the joint will show as interference on the hologram.
