Harvey Washington Wiley (1844-1930),US food chemist. In 1882 Wiley accepted the position of Chief Chemist at the Department of Agriculture. He worked on developing food laws,culminating in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act. The laws were aimed at preventing the adulteration of genuine foods by cheaper,less nutritious and sometimes hazardous substitutes.
