Maurice Wilkins (1916-2004),New Zealand-born British physicist and molecular biologist,in his office at the Department of Biophysics,King's College London. Wilkins studied at Cambridge,gaining his PhD in 1940. He went on to work as deputy leader of a biophysics project at King's College London in 1946. This work involved the using X-ray diffraction to study the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA),the results of which supported James Watson and Francis Crick's proposal for DNA structure. For this,Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Crick and Watson. Photographed circa 1981 | |
