The surface is covered in sharp placoid scales,which are also known as dermal teeth or denticles. The scales have a very similar structure to teeth,with a central pulp cavity that contains the nerves and blood vessels that is surrounded by a layer of bone-like dentine,which is covered by a layer of enamel.
