Parasitic wasp on boll weevil larva. Close-up of a female Catolaccus grandis wasp on a boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) larva,a pest of cotton crops. This parasitic wasp, found in Mexico, inserts her ovipositor through the covering film and immobilizes the larva. From the larva she withdraws nourishment to complete development of her eggs. Later, she or another female will revisit the boll weevil larva and deposit an egg next to it. The larva will then become a meal for the newly-hatched wasp larva. This is an example of the use of parasitic wasps for biological pest control | |
