Unerupted tooth. Light micrograph of a section through an unerupted tooth in a foetus. In a foetus, tooth development occurs below the future gum line. This growing tooth is at the bell stage of development. Its core (centre) is forming the future pulp cavity or root canal into which nerves and blood vessels enter. The pulp is covered with an inner layer of odontoblasts that produce dentin and an outer ameloblast layer producing enamel. The tooth is surrounded by stellate reticulum,a connective tissue that supports the development of enamel. Magnification: x114 when printed at 10 centimetres across | |
