Goddard rocket in launch tower. Designed and built by US rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945),this was the fourth flight of a liquid-fuel rocket. The rocks at bottom helped keep the guide pipes straight. Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime,Goddard is now hailed as a father of modern astronautics. He explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion, and in 1926 built the first liquid-fuel rocket. His speculations about Moon rockets were ridiculed, and his achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age.
