Goddard rocket launch tower. US rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) originally began testing rockets in Auburn,Massachusetts. He then moved here to Camp Devens,Massachusetts,in the winter of 1929-30. Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime,Goddard is now hailed as a father of modern astronautics. He explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion, and in 1926 built the first liquid-fuel rocket. His speculations about Moon rockets were ridiculed by his contemporaries, and his achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age. Photographed in 1929 | |
