Corneal abrasion on an 8 year old girl's eye. The abrasion is just over the left hand side of the pupil, and has been made visible using a fluorescein dye (yellow/green). This is a superficial injury to the surface of the cornea, the transparent front layer of the eye. It is a painful injury and can cause a weepy eye, discomfort in bright lights (photophobia),and spasms in the eyelid. Treatment includes antibiotic drugs to avoid infection, eye padding to allow healing, and pain-killing drugs. Infection can lead to ulceration of the cornea and corneal scarring | |
