Mendelian inheritance chart. The parents (P1,top row) are a white bantam and a black bantam. The first hybrid generation (F1,second row) consists of black bantams carrying genes from both parents. Mating these birds produces a second hybrid generation (F2,bottom) where a quarter of the bantams are white. This indicates that the black colour is dominant, and the white colour is recessive. Colour being determined by a single gene is known as a Mendelian trait or Mendelian inheritance. Mendelian traits occur in strict mathematical ratios.
