Popocatepetl and Aztec conquest. 17th-centry artwork of soldiers led by Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernan Cortes (1485-1547) encountering Aztecs at the 'smoking mountain' of Popocatepetl,Mexico. This volcano is Mexico's second highest mountain,rising to an elevation of 5452 metres. Estimated to be 730,000 years old,it is located 70 kilometres south-east of Mexico City. Cortes conquered the Aztec Empire in the period 1519 to 1521.
