Buttock muscles. Artwork of the three main muscles of the gluteal region: the gluteus minimus (left),gluteus maximus (right) and gluteus medius (upper right). Together, these muscles act to abduct (move away from the body) and extend the whole leg at the hip joint. The gluteus minimus attaches at the ilium (pelvis) and the outside of the femur (thigh bone). When contracted,it abducts and rotates the leg. The gluteus maximus attaches to the ilium, sacrum (sitting bone) and coccyx (tail bone) at one end,and the outside of the femur at the other. It acts to extend the thigh, and assists with lateral rotation of the leg. The gluteus medius has a similar shape and function to the gluteus minimus. Attached to the ilium and femur,it helps rotate the leg and stabilises the pelvis while walking or running | |
