Worker inspecting water pumps designed to re-irrigate Owens lake. In 1936,the lake was completely drained by the Owens river aqueduct to supply water to the growing city of Los Angeles. Since then, the dry alkaline sediment of the lake bed has caused sandstorms of carcinogenic particles that pose a health hazard to surrounding areas. The re-irrigation of the lake is an effort to mitigate the damage caused by these storms. Photographed in the Owens valley,California,USA | |
