Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth (1810-1895),US apiarist,with beehives. Langstroth trained as a minister,serving as a pastor in Congregational churches in Massachusetts. He took up beekeeping (apiculture) and became renowned for his knowledge of the subject. He invented a movable frame beehive (patented 1852) that is called the Langstroth hive in his honour. His publications include 'The Hive and the Honey-Bee' (1853) and 'Langstroth on the Honey Bee' (1860). His residence from 1859,Langstroth Cottage,in Oxford,Ohio,was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. His papers from the period 1885-1895 are held at the American Philosophical Society | |
