Carl Voegtlin (1879-1960),Swiss-US pharmacologist. Voegtlin studied in Switzerland,obtaining his doctorate in Germany in 1902 and studying in the UK before travelling to the USA in 1904. He worked at Johns Hopkins University,in the pharmacology department. He then worked from 1913 at the US Public Health Service (later the National Institute of Health). Areas he worked on included chemotherapy,parathyroid drugs,and the toxicology of uranium compounds. In 1938,he became the first director of the National Cancer Institute.
