William Parker Foulke (1816-1865),US palaeontologist. Foulke worked as a lawyer in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,USA,but was also a geologist and naturalist. He was most famous for his discoveries in palaeontology,having discovered the first full dinosaur skeleton fossil found in North America. He made the discovery in Haddonfield,New Jersey in 1858. The dinosaur was named Hadrosaurus foulkii in his honour. Foulke also worked on prison reform,the abolition of slavery,and the resettlement of freed slaves. He was active in the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences,the Historical Society of Pennsylvania,and the American Philosophical Society |
