J. Peter Lesley (1819-1903),US geologist. Lesley trained as a Christian minister and preacher,while also pursuing his interest in geology by assisting in the first geological survey of Pennsylvania. By 1851,he had abandoned his ministry and become a consulting geologist. He rose to become State Geologist of Pennsylvania in 1874,as well as professor of geology at the University of Pennsylvania (1872-1878). He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences,and active in the American Philosophical Society (secretary and librarian) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
